Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Full Professor, Department of Earth System Science
Deputy Editor-In-Chief, Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences
Jin-Yi Yu is a Professor in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine. He obtained his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington in 1993, following a B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from National Taiwan University in 1984. Dr. Yu has held positions at UC Irvine since 2002, progressing from Assistant Professor to Full Professor, and previously served as a researcher at UC Los Angeles.
Dr. Yu's research primarily addresses climate modeling and dynamics, particularly the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). He is widely recognized for differentiating and exploring the "Central Pacific El Niño" and "Eastern Pacific El Niño," significantly expanding the understanding of ENSO diversity. This work has been cited extensively in the scientific community, reflecting its impact. Dr. Yu's research also investigates the dynamics of subtropical ENSO, marine heatwaves, and trans-basin climate interactions. His research has been supported by numerous grants from prestigious organizations, including the National Science Foundation and the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan.
At UC Irvine, Dr. Yu is engaged in teaching courses related to climate dynamics and atmospheric sciences. He has been actively involved in university governance through roles such as Vice Chair of the Earth System Science Department and serving on various committees, including the Academic Senate Task Force on Climate Change. Dr. Yu is also committed to mentoring a diverse group of students and early career scientists, contributing to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the academic community.
